More than 1,500 artists participate in more than 266 events during 18 days of intense cultural activity are in the celebration of the 468th anniversary of the founding of Merida, Yucatan. Merida City Council through the Department of Culture, with support from various public and private institutions, is organizing this event which will be the ideal platform to publicize and promote the talents of Meridian artists, between local people and visitors.
The City Festival rescues and displays our folklore uniting it with the cultural wealth of Argentina, which each year will be the invited country to fill of flavor these celebrations. You can enjoy skillful spectacles of dance, music, theater, visual arts and literature.
The night of the 5 of January, with the traditional dawn, there is singing for the wide-awake city with the voice of hundreds of traditional performers that sing of our beautiful city on its anniversary. There are many performances accompanied by beautiful songs by trova yucateca, that also starts in the colonial park “the Heroes” of Santa Lucia towards the Municipal Palace, so that sounding of the bells of the average night all in a single voice sing “Las mañanitas” for this grand anniversary.
The 6th of January, the meridians congregate with faith before the majestic altar of the Cathedral of San Idelfonso in a ceremony celebrated for the anniversary of Mérida. Founded on the 6th of January in 1542 by Francisco de Montejo and Leon, son of “Advanced” Francisco de Montejo, in the native seat of T-Ho, the town of Mérida, which is today’s city State Capital of Yucatan. That same day in Municipal Palace, the mayor of the city, heads the session of town hall, ceremony that includes a reflection of our identity and commitment with the Mérida of today and the morning, in which authorities and citizens are united with pride and celebration of the anniversary, remembering the men that made our way towards the prosperity and development possible.
