The origin of this place dates back to 1707 when it was built and little by little, as it passed through different owners, it also changed its function, since at some point it was ordered that part of the portals located there would be part of the public roads and would be used for businesses that benefit those passing through the area; Later during the time of the Spanish, it was the place where the subjects of the conquerors stayed.

At the end of 1974 the building was demolished and the land was sold to the City Council two years later, it was at that moment when the leaders in turn decided to return to the Main Square the appearance of Plaza Cerrada until the first stone was laid in 1997 of what would then be called Municipal Cultural Center, over the years and given that one of its establishments previously bore the name of El Olimpo , is used to name this place.

With the purpose of highlighting the main part of the center of Mérida and after different establishments placed in this space, finally in In 1999, what until now is a large space dedicated to the promotion of culture, art and science in the city was inaugurated, thus the Olimpo Cultural Center emerged.

Various artistic exhibitions, theatrical events, conferences, concerts, among others, are constantly taking place on this site.

It has a planetarium in which various documents and graphic information about the universe are presented, as well as some conferences and workshops; Likewise, it presents a library with a large collection for consultation; offers movie screenings; a video room and of course, a conference and exhibition room.

Among the activities that constantly take place here are trova Tuesdays, concert Wednesdays in which it is possible to enjoy jazz rhythms, bolero, among others; classical Thursdays with chamber music and piano recitals; Fridays and Saturdays are part of the artistic weekend, where you can enjoy children's plays, other more regional plays, puppet shows, dance, among others; Sundays are dedicated to the kings of the home, children's Sundays.

Without a doubt a space for new local talents to expose their work and their abilities to those who visit the place and tourists can also learn a little more about the culture that is experienced in this state.
