In the Punta Sur ecological reserve, in Cozumel, you will find one of the best preserved archaeological structures in the area, El Caracol.

It was built between 1200 and 1400 AD. and it was the place where the Mayans warned of the arrival of hurricanes, because it has some seashells, which emitted a sound when the air passed through them, according to the intensity of the sound was the intensity of the wind, in this way it was warned to sailors the dangerousness of the tide and to be able to find a refuge.

It has a central temple of barely 5 meters by three; to the east there is another somewhat larger building that pretends to be a large mound covered by sand; It is surrounded by stones of various types, there are squared, irregular and others carved.

In building 2, you will see some rectangular holes that go through the walls of its walls, it has been built with different stones and they have been covered with stucco, at its angles there are curved shapes instead of pointed ones.

In one part it is possible to observe a set of stones of different shapes and sizes, placed in such a way that it gives the impression that at some point it was used as an altar for the gods who protected them and whom they worshiped.
