Akumal in Maya means “Land of Turtles”. It is a beautiful bay protected by a reef. It has white, sandy beaches that make this site a favorite place for turtles to lay eggs.
Shown on the left is the Centro Ecologico Akumal, a group of biologists who are responsible for care and protection of eggs and turtles every year come to this beautiful site.
Akumal is the ideal place for snorkeling and diving because there are approximately two hundred entrances to underground caves, 2 bays including Akumal Bay, “halfmoonbay”. There is also a lake in the area called Yalku Lagoon.
Spectacular lagoon with transparent waters and multicolored fish, ideal for snorkeling due to the shallow depth and calm waters.
