This place currently known as “LA PENI” was inaugurated on February 1, 1895 by Mr. Don Carlos Peón who at that time was governor of the state of Yucatán and functioned as a penitentiary until August 27, 1981, when The prisoners were transferred to the new facility.
After a while the penitentiary was converted and functioned as government offices, which allowed the property to be kept in good condition for many years.
La Expenitenciaria is located right in front of the well-known “Parque de la Paz”, one of the oldest in the city and is the gateway to the historic center of Mérida and thousands of tourists pass by every day. doors from it since the city airport is located on the same avenue a few kilometers ahead.
Today “LA PENI” and “El Parque de la Paz” come together more than ever and become a beacon of light, a high-tech project applied to arts, culture and community coexistence.
In the words of its artistic creator: “It is a recreational space that allows anyone to leave their house, walk, stroll, create and returns to an emblematic and powerful space with history to give it fun to culture. , to be like Segismundo, freedom as in prison and open the world... so that the park serves for peace.”

Seeds
Using your cell phone you can scan a QR code projected on the façade, which will take you to the WebApp to create your own seed and send it to the façade of “LA PENI” and give life to different animals from the region in coexistence. With the local flora, you will see a unique view every time you visit.
Selfie mode.
Using a projected QR code you can take a photo in selfie mode with the maximum brightness of your screen and let your face be part of the great projection.
Cosmos.
Create unrepeatable constellations on the large interactive wall. Use the interactive portals found at both ends of the façade.
In the order of time.
On the façade of “LA PENI” use the flashlight of your mobile device to discover the hidden characters.
Energizes comets.
In the trails located at the ends of the park you can energize the comets by moving your hands in front of the interactive screen and once you gather the necessary energy it will be launched to the facade where it will travel from side to side, like the meteorite that fell in Chicxulub.
Four Elements
In this futuristic installation located at the ends of the façade (arches), go through the digital curtain of the portals with your body or arms to discover the different hidden elements that will be projected in “LA PENI”.
