Located on one of the ridges of the sierra, just three blocks south of the main square, lies an architectural gem of Tekax: the Hermitage of San Diego de Alcalá.

Access to this charming chapel is via a stone staircase, flanked by two masonry walls with small capitals that guide visitors to the top. There, in a sort of esplanade, the chapel in honor of San Diego de Alcalá stands.

The chapel was built in 1645 by the Spanish, who sought to convert the Mayan people to Catholicism. According to legend, the conversion of the Mayans was not progressing favorably until a miracle occurred. The statue of San Diego de Alcalá, which usually resided in the cathedral, was seen atop a well on the hill. Although the statue quickly disappeared and reappeared in the cathedral, it manifested itself over the well several times. This phenomenon was interpreted as a sign that San Diego desired a sanctuary to be built for him at that location.

From the top of the Hermitage, you will have one of the best views of the Magic Town of Tekax. There is a swing on one side, and a few steps down, you’ll find an esplanade with chairs and tables where you can sit and enjoy the beautiful landscape. Next to the hermitage, a beautiful gazebo has been built, with a wooden and wrought iron bridge that connects the hermitage with the gazebo. Along the way, you will see the well mentioned in the legend.

It is definitely worth the trip to enjoy the beautiful scenery and take some memorable photos.
