In the historic Itzimná neighborhood, located in Mérida, Yucatán, there once stood a shrine dedicated to the Mayan god Itzamná. In 1572, the conquerors built a small chapel in this location, and years later, they erected a temple where the Christ of Esquipulas and Saint Michael the Archangel were venerated. From the first chapel, the baptismal font is still preserved and is now located in the renovated Parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, dedicated to this revered Virgin.

The exterior view of the parish is sober and elegant, with a high bell tower and discreet decorations. It is surrounded by lush trees and gardens, and next to it is the Itzimná park, offering a charming view and a perfect place to rest on its benches after visiting the sanctuary.

Currently, the Itzimná neighborhood is one of the most populated in Mérida and hosts one of the most active Catholic communities in the Yucatecan Diocese. This vibrant neighborhood is a reflection of the rich cultural and religious heritage of the region.

The Parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is located at the corner of 20th Street and 19th Street in the Itzimná neighborhood. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit this historic place full of faith and tradition during your stay in Mérida.
