If you visit Homun, you can’t miss the opportunity to explore its incredible cenotes with a local guide. This time, we decided to go with Francisco Dorante, an expert guide who took us in his mototaxi, known as a tricitaxi, to visit four spectacular cenotes in the region. Here we share our experience.
Meeting Point and Preparations
The tour begins at the meeting point, where Francisco greets us with a smile and offers the rental service of life jackets, a mandatory requirement at all cenotes for safety reasons. The site has bathrooms and changing rooms, which is very convenient to get ready before the adventure. Once we were prepared, we boarded the tricitaxi, which can accommodate up to four people, and headed to the first cenote of our tour.
In Homun, you can find more than 28 cenotes of different types, such as semi-open, open, and cave cenotes, each with its own beauty and unique characteristics. Depending on the adventure or experience you’re looking for, Francisco, with his extensive knowledge of the area, can recommend the cenotes that best suit your preferences, whether you’re seeking a peaceful, relaxing exploration, or an exciting adventure with jumps and swimming in deep waters. You’ll find options for all tastes!
Cenote Hoolcozom
Our first stop is Cenote Hoolcozom, an impressive semi-open cenote. What stands out the most is the beautiful emerald green color of its crystal-clear waters. To reach the water’s surface, we descended about 10 meters underground via a wooden and iron staircase that ends at a wooden platform. From there, you can admire the natural light entering through the cenote’s opening, reflecting on the water and creating a mystical atmosphere.
Cenote Baalmil
The second cenote we visited was Cenote Baalmil, a cave-type cenote. Here, the visual spectacle consists of stalactites, stalagmites, and columns that adorn the cave, creating a magical atmosphere. To access the water, we descended about 8 to 10 meters via a wooden staircase. This cenote has two entrances: a staircase carved into the stone and a small cement platform. The water’s surface is wide and crescent-shaped, making the place feel almost infinite under the natural rock dome.
Cenote Canunchen
Our tour continued to Cenote Canunchen, the largest of the four. This cenote is located between 10 and 12 meters underground, and access is via wooden stairs leading to a central platform. Canunchen is deep, with crystal-clear waters that allow you to appreciate the beauty of the bottom. It also has two platforms perfect for the more adventurous who want to dive: one at 7 meters and another at 2.5 meters. Like the previous cenotes, this one also has stalactite and stalagmite formations that adorn the walls, providing a unique experience.
Gastronomic Recommendations
After a day filled with nature and adventure, Francisco suggested several places where we could enjoy local cuisine. We decided to visit Kii Janal, a restaurant that offers delicious traditional Mayan food. It was the perfect final touch to an unforgettable day in Homun.
If you’re looking for an authentic experience full of natural landscapes, don’t hesitate to take this tour with Francisco Dorante in his tricitaxi. We guarantee you’ll leave with unforgettable memories of the cenotes of Homun!
