The main function of wall painting was to adorn buildings with ritual and everyday themes and representations of the natural environment.

Deities and priests were painted, these representations becoming the first visual testimonies of society and its magical and religious symbolic manifestations.

It was customary to repaint the facades with bright colors related to the cardinal points and the deities associated with them.

The interior was also painted, retouching existing murals or replacing them with new designs and themes, perhaps commemorating the 20-year period known among the Mayans as "Katún"
