Religious Life in Tulum
Religious life and pilgrimage to the sanctuary, cultural expression associated with the economy, politics and nature.
The Mayan gods were present in one or more elements of nature. Some manifested in the stars or through atmospheric phenomena such as rain; others, in plants like the ceiba and animals like the jaguar.
Each time of the year and each daily activity, such as harvests, were marked by a ritual consecrated to a deity with the purpose that human work would be rewarded with optimal results.
Tulum was a city dedicated to the planet Venus, which was associated with a dual deity: morning star and sunset star.
The descending god has a close relationship with Venus, for this reason it can be said that in Tulum the sunset star was worshiped, therefore, the image of this deity is found on the façade of some buildings, and the orientation of its entrances look towards the point where this planet hides.
Another important deity was Ek Chuah, a god of commerce who was worshiped in exchange activities.
