The Fort of San Miguel, located to the west of Campeche, is the largest of the six fortifications built in the 18th century to protect the city from constant pirate attacks. Completed in 1801, it was part of a formidable defense system that included walls and other strategically placed forts. The fort’s architectural design was intended to withstand attacks: its winding access path and drawbridge made enemy entry extremely difficult. Inside, you’ll find the guardhouse, officers’ quarters, and a powder magazine, essential elements for its defensive role.
